How To Breathe When You Run

Many beginner or intermediate runners ask me a very good question -one that a runner who has run along time may not think about, or take for granted.

“How do I breathe while I run?”

Is it through my nose?   My mouth?

Correct answer is both, but mostly your mouth.

You want to take in as much oxygen as possible, to regulate your heartbeat and, quite frankly, to stay running! And breathing through your mouth mostly is easiest and best.

However, when you think about it – maybe every 2-3 minutes or so, it is a good idea to breathe in through your nose for two counts (mouth closed) and then exhale one long count/breath out of your mouth.   Completely get rid of all the oxygen/air in your lungs AND your belly.

Why do this?

It helps regulate your heartbeat and refocus your breath -all good things.

Let me know if you have any other questions!
