As I have said to you before sugar is a toxic and addictive substance. Here is some information based on a last night’s episode of 60 minutes. They reported on the work of many researchers that I have been following so I feel confident in the accuracy of this media report. Here are some of the highlights.

High fructose corn syrup and sugar increase your risk of heart attack and stroke.
The long held belief that a calorie is a calorie is now being refuted by scientific evidence. Calories from sugars are different from those of other foods. The body reacts differently from calorie of protein than it does a calorie of sugar.
Dr Kimber Stanhope is now conducting a study:
Subjects were placed in highly controlled setting where the source of every calorie was accounted for.
Subjects ate a low sugar diet for the first few days to obtain baseline blood levels, then 25% of their calories were replaced with sweetened drinks.
According to Dr. Stanhope, after only 2 weeks these subjects had increased levels of LDL cholesterol and other cardiac risk factors.
As I have stated before when we consume too much sugar it gets converted to fat in the liver and increases levels of VLDL (very low density lipoprotein)….In short, the very bad cholesterol. These are the particles that form coronary plaque and are associated with heart attacks.
Not only is sugar bad for your heart, it may also increase your risk of cancer.
Harvard professor, Dr. Lewis Cantley describes how the insulin spike from sugar allows glucose from the bloodstream to enter cancer cells and feed their growth.
He states that if you lower your sugar intake you decrease your risk of cancer.
Sugar is an addictive substance.
Dr Eric Stice is studying the addictive nature of sugar to learn how the human brain responds to sweetness. When sugar is consumed the brain releases Dopamine, just as it does in response to drugs or alcohol.
Dr. Stice sates that sugar activates our brain in a way that is very reminiscent to the drug Cocaine.
There is clearly a euphoric effect from the consumption of sugar.
Dr Stice has found that not only is sugar addictive, but that just like with drugs or alcohol we can build up a tolerance to it.
What this means is that the more sugar we eat, the less we feel the reward. The reward center of the brain is blunted and we need to eat more and more to get the same desired effects.
I conclusion, sugar has the same addictive and physiological effects on the body as drugs or alcohol. None of us would give our child beer, wine or cocaine. Maybe we should think twice before we hand them a soda, fruit juice or piece of cake.
My daughter always likes to ask what foods are worse than others. Last week her question was “what’s worse a five guys burger or the TCBY next door”. While both are clearly not a great choice I said TCBY because of the sugar.

Remember good fats are your friend, but sugar is always your enemy. Avoid consuming more than 25 grams per day.
As prominent sugar researcher Dr. Robert Lustig states. “Just like alcohol and tobacco society has made a conscious choice not eliminate them, but we do need to limit their consumption. I believe sugar belongs in this same waste basket”
Stay healthy my friends,
