What is the best time of day to exercise?

Typically, morning is the best time of day to exercise, in general, ideally right upon waking.

Why is this?

While some of you may groan at this idea, it truly is ideal.   It jump starts your metabolism for the WHOLE day, which is best in burning more calories (ultimately you burn more in the morning routine than at night).
Even just 20 minutes is sufficient to get your “engine” burning. Your cortisol levels are at their highest so your exercise is usually also much more effective, as opposed to the evening when your cortisol is starting to wane. Follow your exercise immediately with a balanced breakfast and you’ll have energy to carry you through the entire day and not crash and burn at 2 p.m., which is very common for most folks who choose not to exercise in the morning. You will also sleep better at night if you don’t exercise in the p.m., which can cause you to jump start your cortisol/happy hormones that keep you energized/awake.

In summary, however, if you HATE morning exercise with a passion and just don’t want to do it, then do it whenever it works for YOU.   Just know that there is a higher success rate for those that exercise first thing in the morning than those that exercise later in the day when the energy is low and the excuses are high.   Life happens mostly after your early morning jump start and you can control that first hour of your day more than several hours later.

The hope is that you exercise no matter what – THAT is what counts in the end.

What really is the best time of day to exercise?   The time you can get it in.
